The Garden to Table programme is an important part of our teaching and learning programme, which helps students develop important life skills. Tamariki work together to grow, harvest and cook food. They get dirty, learn about nutrition and try new foods – it’s a fun, empowering programme that is also very practical and hands-on. All of the culinary action happens in our amazing new Garden to Table classroom, which was officially opened by the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, in September 2022.
Our specialists introduce our tamariki to the pleasures of preparing, cooking and eating a variety of healthy foods from ingredients grown at school. Tamariki learn valuable life skills as they learn how to chop, slice, fry, bake and turn ingredients into tasty food for all to share.
Tamariki are involved in growing and caring for their food from seed to harvest. If we look after our plants, the plants will look after us by providing food. We encourage the children to try new experiences, use all of their senses and work as part of a team. They may get their hands dirty, draw and label a plant, smell some herbs and help shape the landscape around them. They then harvest carrots, beans, tomatoes and many other fruits, vegetables and herbs, bringing them to the well-equipped kitchen to prepare delicious meals to share with their classmates.
